Lyhyt henkäys

The poet does not sit down and laboriously manufacture poetry; he writes when the national soul moves him and he writes what it inspires. The individual prophets, writers, artists or poets are but the means employed by the national soul to give expression to a national religion, a national language or a national literature. They are those of the national group who are most responsive to the stimuli sent out by the national mind. The nationality speaks through them; they are, as it were, the mouth of the group.

Olen kohta pääsemässä Herder-kirjallisuuden suosta suomalaisen kansallisuusaatteen pariin. Vielä kuitenkin sitaatti vuonna 1931 julkaistusta Robert Reinhold Ergangin teoksesta Herder and the Foundations of German Nationalism. Kirjoitusajankohta mietityttää.

Sanat "henkilö", "hengetär", "henkevä" ja "kansanhenki", sekä muita vastaavia henkevyyksiä, kehitettiin kieleemme 1800-luvulla. Sellainen oli ajan henki. Joku toinen sanoi jo hengestä hyvin, ehkä henki tuli häneen ja liikautti?

Joskus ajatus kansanhengestä ja kansallisesta omaleimaisuudesta on tuntunut uudelta.
